What is chitin?

I think it is the second most natural living substance on the planet to cellulose.

Why do i mention it,because i believe it is a vital nutritional supplement for koi.

Among its properties are an antibacterial capability,so much so it is being used now to produce field dressings.

Extracts "oligosaccharides" used in koi food production.

Japanese koi breeders "fertilise" their fry ponds with it prior to the introduction of the fish,it seems to be a great for the production of daphnia,i believe they call it chitosan,i think it also significantly reduces the incidence of bacterial infection in the fry.

I believe it is being increasingly incorporated into human foodstuffs.

Where does it come from? A major source is from sea foods, crab shells, shrimps etc.Funghi also produce it within their cell walls.

How do i feed it?Directly from shrimps.

They are a brilliant source of natural proteins as well as the magical "chitin".

So feeding prawn/shrimp will give the fish this ingredient Chris. You mention shells does this mean it is best to feed these with skins on as the ones I get are peeled.

The dried gammarus shrimps I got from you Chris have certainly brought my koi out their shells, no more shyness at feeding time.
