Hi Fellow Members,

I am looking for some advice and/or the experiences of other members who have Bakki Showers fitted to their ponds and their experience in eradicating parasite.

I fitted a s/s 4 tier Momontaro bakki shower filled with BHM to my pond last Autumn. It was a retro fit and unfortunately I was unable to install it so that the water was pre-filtered. It is fed water direct from the pond by a 20,000 lph pump.

About mid April I noticed some issues with one or two fish and after scrapes discovered mainly Costia with some flukes but the latter were not in big numbers as was the Costia. So far I have had a running 3 month battle with these pests having treated with FMG,(twice) PP (twice) and Supaverm (obviously not at the same time!) but I simply cannot seem to eradicate them. They disappear from the scrape post the treatment but within a few days the fish have the stress lines on them - I scrape and they are back. Water parameters are always spot on so its not that.

It has been suggested to me by someone whose advice I greatly respect that they could be surviving the treatments in the bakki shower as the media is never submerged in the treatment(I always leave the bakki on during the treatments). I am at my wits end here - anyone else experienced this problem and if yes how did you sort it out please? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

I use showers as my biological media, I have treated for flukes with SV and never needed to retreat or had a failure while treating at the recommended dosage rates. PP wise I have always used my own dosage rate but I take the chance at the rate i dose.

I have heard this before, media not submerged, parasite survives etc, but its not a theory I subscribe to, I'm not saying they are wrong but its just not something I have experienced and i have been running showers longer than most.

cheers

Thanks Sarg - could I ask what is your chosen PP dosage rate please?

Thanks

Paul

I have read on a few sites over the last few months that parasites can hide in the larger centre hole of Bhm and avoid contact with treatments?
I'm not sure if that's true or not but it certainly makes you think abit?

Try taking samples around your shower and in it to you’ll be surprised what you find.

When I had my two bakki showers on the side of the pond never seem to get rid of parasites.
Then had a talk with someone and they said scrape around and inside and take samples of the moss that grows all over them.
Ands that’s where they was hiding all the time some of the bloody things can last for a long time if not checked.

Hi fee,

Did you find a way of eradicating them whilst continuing to use the showers?

Cheers

I has having issues with flukes for over a year and spent a fortune on treatments.

had I not managed to get on top of the problems I was going to dismantle the shower and put all the media in a big bowl with fluke treatment for 24 hours, deep clean the shower and put all back together again as I was sure they were hiding in there.

I also scraped a friends pond around the water line and under the lip of his protein skimmer and found flukes, chilodonella, costia and trich all living in it in adequate numbers.

Hi Laura,

I am now very much at the point you mentioned:

"had I not managed to get on top of the problems I was going to dismantle the shower and put all the media in a big bowl with fluke treatment for 24 hours, deep clean the shower and put all back together again as I was sure they were hiding in there".

Can I please ask how you did get on top of the problem and eradicated the flukes - were they in the Bakki Shower or somewhere else? Are you still running the Bakki Shower?

Many thanks

Paul

I think getting my water better helped, reduced stocking a bit, turned my trickle up to refresh the water more when it needed it.

modifications we made to the drum I think was the main success, as the drum was being cleaned by water from the clean side of the drum, it was taking any medication out that we put in. we also had to continue the trickle in/out as the level would drop meaning the drum would go into overdrive as the sensor thought the level had dropped due to blocked screens.

we took the cleaning pump out of the drum and put it in its own tank with an auto top up system so that when it used the water in there (that was fresh and didn't contain the medication) it wasn't removing the medicated water from the pond. this meant we could turn the trickle off when treating and that the medication was at a concentration it needed to be at to do its job.

we have continued to run our shower, scrapes done since have showed nothing up. flashing I have put down to still having a higher than I would like ammonia level.
